JEFFERSON-CHALMERS: “GARDEN CROSSING”

Garden Crossing is a development project located in the Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood on the East side of Detroit. The site utilizes a number of vacant lots surrounding a community garden just south of Jefferson Ave, on Manistique St. This project set out to expand on the community gardening theme within the neighborhood and create a prototype for a development that could be repeated in various locations North and South of Jefferson.

After studying Urban patterns and social factors in the community, this project introduces a new edge condition, to enhance public circulation from street to street, that is unfamiliar to the neighborhood by creating a public walkway connecting Philip St. and Manistique St. This walkway is directly perpendicular to the Manistique garden. A Farmer’s market, Pavilion/Stage area, and Mixed-Use building all coalesce on the walkway to create an exciting public space that respects the garden. Townhomes offer single-family housing that fills in around the mixed-use building. Each aspect of the development maintains the architectural character of the neighborhood.

As Jefferson-Chalmers is known for flooding, this project also utilizes storm-water management infrastructure to aid in creating a sustainable project. Pervious paving, green roofs, bioswales, and rain collection barrels are all essential to aid in this issue.
