The Soo Health and Sports Facility
The Soo Health and Sports Facility is located on the Ashmun Bay Park site in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The overall building form is influenced by the sloping shoreline, topographical conditions and the integration of nearby landmarks. Pathways and ramps on the site provide a connection to adjacent recreational areas in addition to creating a more universal design. The building is divided into 3 main building masses consisting of a field house, natatorium, and lobby/cafe space. The primary structure of the building consists of steel portal frames with a cantilever over an exterior south walkway that is partially shaded by bifacial photovoltaic panels. Secondary structural members as well as prefabricated wood envelope panels will be locally sourced along with completion of other design goals to comply with standards of the Living Building Challenge. Sightlines between levels are designed to provide transparency and a feeling of openness within enclosed spaces.
