The SOO Recreation Center / Health and Sports Hall focuses on connectivity between the created place and the natural place. The design is driven by provision of daylight into every activity space, views of the outdoor activities available at the site, and energy production capabilities. The exterior materials are inspired by the heavily wooded site, with ample wood detailing and an accessible, ramped floor plan that steps with the natural topography of the site to limit the disturbance of the building to the existing environment. The tree-like hallways of the building are designed to connect the interior circulation to the trails that begin at the garden court of the building and explore the wetlands and bay-activity areas of the southern portion of the site, re-establishing the importance of connection to the outdoors in the activities offered at the center.
