The Soo Health and Sports Hall
Kimberly Thomson

The design and development of this building prioritize two core principles: community health and sustainability. While the primary functions of the Soo Health and Sports Hall are curling and swimming, the facility also offers a wide range of additional programs and amenities. These include a weight and gym area, yoga studio, racquetball court, dance room, rock climbing wall, indoor track, daycare center, classrooms, and a café. Open to both residents of Sault Ste. Marie and visiting tourists, the center promotes inclusivity and a strong sense of community. The structure features a fully steel framing system with precast concrete shear walls, intentionally left largely exposed to showcase the dynamic connections between structural elements and to highlight the integration of the HVAC system once installed. In terms of sustainability, the building is designed to meet—and surpass—LEED Platinum standards across categories such as materials, site use, energy efficiency, and indoor environmental quality. Key strategies include the use of sawtooth roofs that maximize northern daylight and provide an ideal surface for photovoltaic panels, enabling the building to generate all its own power. The HVAC systems are LEED-certified, ensuring efficient and comfortable heating, cooling, and air circulation throughout the facility.
