The Soo Health and Sport Hall

Shanda Rossi

Welcoming you to the sports complex facility where community members will be able to access a gym that features multiple courts, a three-pool natatorium, café with indoor/outdoor seating, fitness center with weights & a running track, rock climbing wall, daycare facilities, multiple classrooms/multi-purpose rooms, walking trails that spread throughout the bay, and outdoor game courts that convert between summer/winter sports. Inspiration of the building design comes from the surrounding community area such as the control dam and bridges including the Sault Ste Marie International Bridge. These structures in the community influence the hip style roofing, metal railings, ‘V’ shaped structural elements, and arched roofing. Community members will be able to not only access the amenities of this building but also the fishing, walking trails, and ATV trails that are available on Ashmun Bay. The overall footprint of the facility is stacked into three stories so that there is minimal intrusion to the existing site. Users have access to daylighting and views to the surrounding natural landscape. Construction materials will be repurposed or recycled. Located on the main roof of the structure is a PV solar array system that produces approximately 1,000,000 kWh/year which exceeds LBC requirements.
