Soo Health & Sports Hall

Katia Espinoza

Soo Health & Sports Hall is a community-centered recreational facility located at Ashmun Bay Park in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The project integrates wellness, movement, and education through a dynamic blend of program spaces, including a natatorium, a double-height gymnasium, and flexible classrooms that support both physical activity and community engagement. The design prioritizes environmental performance and structural clarity, using a cross-laminated timber (CLT) system with glulam columns and beams to express warmth, rhythm, and a connection to the region’s natural resources. A clerestory roof introduces natural daylight into the large-volume spaces while accommodating seasonal changes in light and temperature. Sustainability is embedded into the project through a paired Multi-Zone DOAS and VRF mechanical system, ensuring energy efficiency and healthy indoor air quality. The building aligns with LEED performance standards. Sited to maximize views of the bay and integrate with the existing park pathways, the design responds to prevailing winds, snow loads, and the duality of Michigan’s summer and winter conditions. The result is a resilient, welcoming hub for recreation and wellness—a space where the community can gather, learn, and thrive.
