Locked In: Parallels Between Schools and Prisons
Grace Spondike

This studio project investigates the deep structural and disciplinary parallels between schools and prisons, questioning the degree to which institutional form can regulate behavior, autonomy, and future potential. Schools are intended to foster development, but they also can resemble carceral systems by focusing on control, surveillance, and compliance over creativity and autonomy. School and prison building typologies are similar in many cases because they both seek similar security goals. One is designed to confine individuals, and the other is built to exclude others. Both reinforce a state of control and restricted freedom. This project critically examines how schools, like prisons, reinforce systems of power and uphold the school-to-prison pipeline. A comparison of space design, disciplinary rules, and work expectations shows how both institutions socialize individuals for subordination rather than liberation. In this analysis, the project requires reform and advocates for learning environments that enable instead of enclose.
