Engaging History: Disseminating Digital Reconstructions to a Public Audience through Video Games
Matthew Malski

There is a disproportionate focus on the scientific community in the field of digital reconstruction of historic architecture. While there exists discussion on public dissemination techniques, this project furthers that discussion by focusing deeper on the use of video games as a dissemination tool to the public. The opportunities afforded by current technology can be utilized to create engaging, immersive environments used quite successfully in entertainment games.
Current literature discusses the benefits of using video games as an educational tool. By applying the proven storytelling techniques used in entertainment games to disseminating digital reconstructions, the full benefits of interactive learning are gained.
St. Görans hospital church ruins become a case study, where players can take on the perspectives of historical characters to complete tasks and solve puzzles in several time periods of the church’s history. By utilizing each character’s unique ability, the player works towards completing a holographic reconstruction of the ruin in the hub world. The deeper the player explores, more is revealed of the church’s mysterious past and the uncertainties involved in trying to visualize history.
