Buhl Reimagined into a Biophilic Future

Elizabeth Davis

Buhl Reimagined into a Biophilic Future transforms Detroit’s historic Buhl Building into a regenerative civic-cultural hub that blends ecological design with social equity. Drawing from the layered history of Detroit's Financial District, this reimagining emphasizes healing, community, and environmental harmony. The design creates unique spaces to encourage reconnection amongst the people and with nature while celebrating the city’s resilience.

Serving as a civic commons, the space supports flexible live/work units and cooperative housing, fostering group living and inclusive public engagement. Curved walls, organic materials, and water-inspired murals evoke a sense of flow and renewal, while preserved design elements honor the building’s industrial past. Floor-to-ceiling murals narrate stories of forgotten streams and community memory, turning architecture into a living tribute to Detroit’s endurance.

The Buhl now exists as a layered spatial experience—equal parts post-war memorial, cultural incubator, and sustainable prototype. Clients representing a diversity of age, culture, and creative professions informed a design ethos centered on innovation, harmony, and resilience. This project not only redefines urban renewal but acts as a forward-thinking vision for cities rooted in history, branching into a greener, more connected future.
