Beyond the Game: Reimagining Sports Venues

Eric Van Amstel

The persistent problem of underutilized stadiums following mega-events like the FIFA World Cups in South Africa, Brazil, and Russia reveals the shortcomings of traditional stadium design, which often fails to deliver lasting community value despite heavy public investment. This project addresses that issue by redefining the stadium as a permanent, integrated element of the urban fabric—active, accessible, and inclusive year-round. Built upon Module A, B, and C the design incorporates a mixed-use base featuring community-oriented spaces such as farmers markets, retail, and event venues, ensuring continuous public engagement beyond match days. Above, the structure transitions into vertical housing to accommodate both short- and long-term residents, fostering a lived-in, connected environment. With public access preserved at all times—except during games—the stadium becomes a shared civic asset rather than a gated spectacle, offering a modular, sustainable model for future sports architecture that prioritizes long-term relevance and urban vitality.
