A Healthy Urban Block | Supporting a Healthy Lifestyle

Ryan Laurain

This project will place itself in an urban center, with the ambitions of provoking activity, wellness, and a healthy lifestyle. Where this development sets itself apart is through it's 'backwards' use of consumerism techniques to promote a series of mixed-use functions, programs, and architecture. These mixed-use programs will include residential units to allow residents to directly benefit from all aspects of the 'Mega-Block', as well as supplementary programs such as fresh food growth facilities, commercial districts, fitness centers, learning spaces, and an ample amount of active greenspace.

The implementation of these tactics is critical for the benefit of the Mega-Block and surrounding communities, as we have seen an increased rate of obesity and health disorders throughout major urban environments. This is even noticed and highlighted in New York City, which is highly regarded as a walkable city. However, current urban environments are designed with a focus on the suppliers and developers benefits, rather than the consumers; meaning, current designs are feeding off of consumerism tactics to rope the community in to products, programs, and spaces that harm them rather than benefit them.

Through these misuses of power in our design ability, we see this affecting the communities. Thus, we as designers need to use our education and expertise to create a Mega-Block community that benefits all...from the residents to the neighboring communities to the developer to the rest of the city, country, and ultimately the world through this new kit of parts precedent.
