Wabi-Sabi Chair

Daniel Carbajal Patino

This project reimagines the chair as more than a functional object, transforming it into an extension of human experience. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of “wabi-sabi”, which finds beauty in imperfection and impermanence, the chair embodies complex emotions such as stress, anxiety, and the fear of the unknown. Though often seen as negative, these emotions are intrinsic to the human condition. Rather than eliminating them, the project emphasizes
acknowledgment and balance through mindfulness, meditation, and grounding practices. Drawing from personal experiences of emotional overwhelm and the search for clarity, this exploration seeks to integrate principles of presence and self-awareness into the design.
By embracing the “wabi-sabi” ethos, the chair invites users to find meaning in imperfection, cultivating a sense of calm and personal growth in the face of life’s uncertainties.
