Little Detroit

Keagan McLean

Little Detroit is a bold reimagining of after-school care—designed not just as
a safe space, but as a launchpad for creativity, confidence, and possibility in children from low-income communities. Rooted in the city’s legacy of innovation and resilience, Little Detroit transforms traditional childcare into a vibrant, inclusive environment where kids are empowered to dream big and build boldly. Through adaptive design, intentional aesthetics, and playful spatial storytelling, the space fosters belonging, sparks imagination, and encourages collaboration. The design strikes a dynamic balance, blending the playful energy of childhood with Detroit’s raw, industrial spirit. Exposed materials meet colorful forms; cozy nooks invite reflection while bold structures inspire ambition. Every element is crafted to engage curiosity and affirm each child’s potential.

This isn’t just a place to go after school—it’s a place to grow into who you’re meant to be.
In Little Detroit, the future isn’t handed to kids. It’s handed back to them, for them to imagine, create, and claim as their own.
