Bright Horizons
Abigail Zambeck

Located in Detroit’s 48213 zip code is ranked among Michigan’s fourth poorest neighborhoods. McKerrow Elementary stands as a historical landmark and a symbol of opportunity for revitalization. Built in 1926 in a single construction phase, the building’s scale reflects a once-thriving, well-established neighborhood. Situated on 3.15 acres in the Russell Woods–Nardin Park area, the 49,900 square-foot structure is one of many abandoned school facilities throughout Detroit. Once a space for learning and community, McKerrow now presents a unique opportunity to transform an underutilized site into a vibrant asset. This project envisions the transformation of this elementary school into a vibrant community resource that prioritizes inclusivity, resilience, and trust. By designing spaces that support children’s cognitive, physical, and imaginative development while also providing vital resources for parents, the initiative fosters stronger social bonds and neighborhood pride. The environment will encourage activity, creativity, and engagement for all ages, ultimately contributing to a healthier, more connected, and empowered community. This revitalization not only meets the immediate needs of residents but also lays the foundation for lasting positive change.
