Water Street Rec
Caitlin O'Meara

The Water Street recreational center is located in Sault Ste. Marie, MI situated on the St. Marys River between the Museum Ship Valley Camp and the Saint Marys Falls Hydropower Plant. This prime location allows Sault Ste. Marie residents to enjoy the natural landscape that defines the city while visiting the recreation center. Focusing on user experience, this mass timber building welcomes everybody into the space to participate in any of the varying programs this building offers. Using LEED as a backbone for this project, this building encourages sustainable design and intends to leave a lasting mark on the city. This high performance building captures all the energy onsite on a yearly basis that is required to run self-sufficiently using rooftop solar arrays. This thoughtful design takes into consideration four LEED categories, Material, Health, Energy, and Site, and incorporates creative design decisions to achieve credits in each category. This design used these criteria as inspiration to set the path for the Water Street recreation center in Sault Ste. Marie.
