Water Street Community Center
Joshua Smith

This project is rooted in context; from the beginning there was a consideration made to fit in with the existing fabric of water street. Being that our neighbor is the Pullar ice arena, this informs the arched roof shape and truss system the main floor employs. With that in mind, we now shift focus to the more progressive elements of this design including the water retention system, use of photovoltaic shingles and passive heating strategies. The water harvesting and retention system noted throughout this poster allows for net positive potable water collection. This system also serves to echo the condition of the waterfront north end of the building, communicating what is to come as one circulates throughout the building. The use of PV shingles allows for a low profile and are optimized by the arch and angle of the roof to catch direct rays during all daylight hours. The water retention pond serves yet another purpose, by allowing diffused light and solar heat gain into the light well lounge the building staff and occupants can control heat let into the building.
