The vision for this project in Detroit is to create a sustainable and energy-efficient building that not only integrates seamlessly with its urban context but also sets a new benchmark for environmentally responsible design. The project is designed to achieve LEED certification, focusing on energy performance, water conservation, material sustainability, and occupant well-being. The building features a series of on-grade courtyards and green roofs, strategically placed to enhance natural daylight access and provide occupants with views of the surrounding landscape. These courtyards serve as both aesthetic and functional spaces, promoting outdoor engagement and contributing to improved air quality and stormwater management. The green roofs further support biodiversity, energy efficiency, and insulation, reducing the urban heat island effect and enhancing the building’s thermal performance. To meet energy performance standards, photovoltaic (PV) panels are installed on the roof to generate clean, renewable energy. This reduces the building’s reliance on external energy sources, lowering its carbon footprint. The use of mass timber in construction significantly reduces embodied carbon, as it sequesters carbon dioxide during its life cycle. This sustainable material choice supports the project’s goal of creating a low-carbon, high-performance building.
