The Stack
Koby Miller

The Stack is a multi-use building located in the Riverfront district of Detroit, Michigan. One building features a community area, retail locations, and residential apartments, the second hosts light industrial manufacturing / office spaces. Both buildings contain a mass timber structure that includes glu-laminated beams and columns, and cross-laminated floor and roof panels. The buildings look to blur the lines between work, home, and social atmospheres while giving each their own designated areas. The buildings are deigned based on the pushing and pulling of stacked rectangles. This can be seen not only in the floor plans, but in the facade and roof lines as well. The buildings feature a lot of glazing, particularly on the North facades, to allow light in without subjecting occupants to harsh southern light. The interior of the Community, Retail, and Residential building features interior glass curtain walls that allow for light to penetrate deep into the building. The light industrial building features an open floor plan and a lofted second floor that allows for the same. Together, these design strategies create a dynamic, light filled environment that reflects the evolving relationship between urban living, work, and community.
