The Soo Health & Sports Hall
Josh Mead

The Soo Health and Sport Hall is designed to reflect the spirit of gathering that has defined the community of Sault Ste Marie for thousands of years. Located along the St. Mary’s River, the building serves as a new center for health, recreation, and connection, accessible to all members of the community. The design focuses on creating a welcoming, uplifting environment by maximizing natural daylight, providing fresh air and thermal comfort year-round, and using local, sustainable materials that reduce the building’s carbon footprint. Spaces are organized to promote ease of movement and clarity, encouraging a strong relationship between interior and exterior environments. Universal accessibility is a priority throughout the design, ensuring that every visitor, regardless of ability, can use and enjoy the facility. Given the Soo’s harsh winters and history of extreme weather, the Health and Sport Hall is built for resiliency and utilization of natural heating through the use of a thermal labyrinth. The structure and envelope systems are designed to withstand the region’s climatic extremes, while the building’s mechanical systems prioritize low-energy use and robust fresh-air ventilation. Circulation within the Hall is designed to be intuitive, safe, and engaging, shaped by the topography of the site, river views, and seasonal rhythms of light. The result is a project that strengthens the relationship between people, place, and community, continuing the long legacy of the Soo and what it stands for.
