The Soo Health & Sport Hall
Heli Xu

"The Soo Health & Sport Hall is a multi-level recreational facility designed to foster health, wellness, and community engagement in Sault Ste. Marie’s cold-humid climate. Located at the Ashmun Bay Park site, the building is carefully integrated with the natural topography, preserving site contours while enhancing accessibility and visual connection to the water.
The design emphasizes sustainability through passive solar orientation, daylighting strategies, and photovoltaic array that generates surpassing the building’s energy needs and achieving net-positive performance in alignment with LEED Platinum.
Organized along an axial system, the program includes athletic courts, a natatorium, fitness and weight training areas, classrooms, and a café. Generous glazing provides natural light to interior spaces and enhances the connection between users and the surrounding landscape. The double-height lobby serves as a social and visual anchor, welcoming visitors into the core of the facility.
Emphasizing biophilic design and material transparency, the project uses regionally sourced and low-emission materials. Together, the architectural form and systems express a commitment to energy efficiency, wellness, and ecological responsibility—positioning the Soo Health & Sport Hall as a forward-thinking model for sustainable recreational design."
