The Ashmun A

Michael Gerace

The Ashmun A is a multi-use sports and recreation facility in Sault Ste. Marie, combining athletic areas with offices, classrooms, and child care to meet diverse community needs. Designed to achieve LEED Zero in energy, water, waste, and carbon, it integrates sustainability, structure, enclosure, HVAC, and user experience into a cohesive whole. Set on a sloped site, the building steps down in half-levels toward the water, allowing daylight to reach lower spaces while preserving views and minimizing site disruption. A mass timber A-frame anchors the structure, with branching secondary systems that reduce embodied carbon and express a warm, regional material palette of locally sourced wood and copper. Copper panels offer durability while highlighting natural textures. Natural light and ventilation are enhanced through sloped roofs, operable louvers, and skylights along the ridge. HVAC and fresh air are distributed via architectural “ribs” that support the building’s form and performance. Water use is reduced through greywater harvesting, which irrigates an interior green wall that boosts indoor air quality and wellness. Together, these elements create a resilient, low-impact facility rooted in Sault Ste. Marie’s climate, context, and community—promoting wellness, connection, and environmental stewardship.
