St. Mary's Center

Jack Kehoe

The St. Mary’s Center (SMC) goal is a serve as a public gathering space that will be a future icon for Sault Ste. Marie and the Soo location. The St. Mary’s Center will host athletic competitions and fitness amenities with a gymnasium and swimming pool. On top of that, the project provides a space for a community garden, open courtyard, sit-down restaurant with outdoor seating, workout areas, and the new and improved Soo Locks Tour offices. The building uses compression and release design strategies to give the occupants an eye-catching and inspiring journey while moving throughout the build. The project uses locally sourced steel for the structure and exterior façade constructed of perforated panels. Large clerestory windows and sola tube modules will also provide plenty of natural daylight to cut artificial lighting needs. This project will be entirely self-efficient for power and heating with the provided solar and thermal array on the roof of the structure. Occupants will also be able to enjoy the aesthetic views of the St. Mary’s River, Valley Camp Museum, and the historic St. Mary’s Falls Hydropower Plant... all three of which could use the connection of the SMC to tie all three together effectively. This structure is also going to feature a rainwater collecting system through blue / green roofs and bioswales which will improve water quality for Sault Ste. Marie and also will reduce the risk of flooding in the city. In conclusion, the overall use of the systems and strategies will make this proposal not only efficient, logical, and pleasant looking, but a great addition to the community of Sault Ste. Marie.
