St Mary's Recreation Center

Madison Morris

"St. Mary’s Recreation Center is rooted in the idea of accessibility and reconnection—with nature, with movement, and with each other. The building follows a radial design, with four distinct programmatic masses extending from a central, light-filled atrium. This atrium, supported by a wooden space frame with tree-like columns, evokes the feeling of being outdoors, while indoor gardens provide opportunities for food production, learning, and reflection.

A feature ramp winds gently through the atrium, offering equitable access while revealing framed views into each of the primary spaces. These masses—expressed as individual “buildings”—are clad in local red sandstone, with large parapets and a rigid, gridded structure that contrast the organic form of the atrium. Ribbed concrete and terracotta brick are used to articulate carved voids, allowing light to enter while expressing the relationship between structure and enclosure.

Throughout the space, fall-colored furniture pays tribute to the vivid autumns of Sault Ste. Marie, complementing the earthy tones of the surrounding material palette. Universal access is ensured with ramps into the pool and climbing wall, while glazing along the river edge frames natural views and brings the outdoors in—grounding the experience in place."
