Soo Health and Sports Hall

Alan Daniloff

This project responds to several conditions present on its site in Sault Ste Marie, MI, indluding sunlight, wind, and viewsheds. The overall curved gesture of the building accomplishes several of these responses. The curve allows the arched sawtooth windows to capture a variety of viewsheds along the north and east of the site, including the hydroelectric dam and the St. Mary river. The curve, combined with the overall massing, creates a tennis courtyard that is sheltered from the wind on three sides by the building, and on one side by the existing museum ship next to the site. Between the north-facing sawtooths and usage of transluscent glass panels, the building responds to sunlight by reducing strong southern glare and letting in indirect northern light. The open layout of the “spine” of the building allows the light entering from the sawtooths to really fill the space, creating a bright and airy feeling.
