Soo Health and Athletic Center

Miranda Platte

Soo Health and Athletic Center is located at the North end Ashmun Bay in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. This site is near the existing ATV and snowmobile trailhead, creating a journey through nature to visit. Taking inspiration from the Indigenous history of the area, the front facade of the building uses a curved chock and rod system to mimic the ribs of a canoe. The building takes advantage of this South-facing facade by creating a daylight atria for greenery and plant life, but also as a method of light penetration to the subgrade level. The subgrade natatorium and grade level gymnasium are stacked to minimize building footprint, avoiding interference with the existing greenspace around the site. This greenspace makes for a prime opportunity for the two North facing observation patios that not only provide additional greenspace to the building, but also have integrated skylights to allow light deeper into the building. The enclosure system of the building consists of patina copper panels, green tinted glass, and kalwall to camouflage the building into the existing context of the surrounding forestry. Using the Living Building Challenge as a guiding principle, beauty and integration with nature are at the forefront of design decisions.
