Soo Health & Sports Hall

Ellyse Town

This project, located in Sault Ste Marie, MI, is focused on bringing more engagement into the community while benefiting the environment. The Soo Health and Sports Hall strives in its response to demographics and needs from the community. With a large population of old and young locals, programmatic choices were made to cater to these groups. A pool was added to the program instead of an ice rink to fit the community need for public pool access and swimming lessons for the younger locals. There are multiple spaces throughout the building (study, gym and fitness spaces) that are created to be program flexible. The gym can host basketball, but also things such as synthetic curling and pickleball, catering towards the older crowd. It can also be treated as a banquet hall, and has the space for a large range of court type combinations: basketball, tennis, pickleball, badminton, curling, and volleyball. The study and fitness spaces can be made larger or smaller with flexible partitions to fit the need of the event. This building hosts a green roof and berming along the sides to integrate the building into the earth and also act as a thermal buffering system.
