Sault Ste. Marie Health and Sports Hall
Vincent Hansell

The design targets LEED Platinum certification by emphasizing sustainability, health, and connectivity. Located in the most active part of Ashmun Bay Park, the project preserves more green space while promoting engagement. A mass timber structural system, chosen for its renewable nature, local sourcing, and natural aesthetic, supports the building’s sustainable mission. Energy is offset through a large PV array, complemented by efficient systems like VRF HVAC and a green roof designed for rainwater collection. The form centers on connectivity—both within the building and with the surrounding landscape—through double-height spaces, accessible outdoor areas, and framed vistas. The looping, spiral form creates moments of place-making and flow, reinforcing the central track as a structural and spatial core. A ramp encircles the track, guiding users along the perimeter while physically expressing the spiral and linking key program areas. The roof shape highlights the inner void and unifies the building’s dynamic spatial experience.
