Sault Ste. Marie Community Center

Alex Lundy

This project is a community center located in Sault Ste. Marie, Mi, which was developed with the influence of the LEED platinum outline. The building is situated on the urban site in a way which connects it to the street frontage and surrounding existing amenities at a walkable scale. Additionally, the placement of the building is such, that it and its constituent parts are constructed upon previously developed areas of land, replacing no previously undeveloped spaces. The interior of the building introduces natural lighting into larger floor plate through clearstory windows and fenestration at the end of corridors, which also allow for unobstructed views outward. This larger floor plate also works to reduce exterior wall square footage by internalizing spaces, such as locker rooms and corridors. Additionally, the roof structures which allow daylight into these spaces serve as photovoltaic mounting areas, which improve energy production.
