Sault Ste Marie Health and Sports Hall
Taylor Croghan

"The athletic hall in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, prioritizes social and physical connectivity through architectural and environmental strategies. To adapt to the complex needs of Sault Ste Marie locals and visitors, the Sports Hall inhibits a range of activities for patrons, providing flexibility in activity types that cater to varying levels of physicality through open programmable spaces. To further promote connectivity, the atrium cutting through the center of the building utilizes the second-level track circuit to encompass the space, enhance visibility between public activities, and facilitate LEED credentials such as quality indoor environments.
The strength of the Waterstreet site reinforces movement on the ground floor program by informing it with its 10-foot slope. By progressively moving users down within the building, the program creates transparency between the interior and exterior of the building and the site. Furthermore, ramps are the primary pathway to eliminate hierarchy and displacement while connecting with the site's natural topography.
Structurally, movement is present in the mass timber double beam/column radial arches in the southern and northern bays. They symbolize gathering spaces and open them up to daylighting opportunities through dropped clerestories that align with the structure while angling the facade to create a dynamic shape."
