East Riverfront Community Wellness Center
Ethan Schilling

The East Riverfront Community Wellness Center is conceived as a response to the growing demand for health, wellness, and recreational infrastructure in Detroit’s expanding East Riverfront neighborhood. Aligned with the vision of Detroit’s 2017 Master Plan and Bedrock’s ongoing development initiatives, the center supports the broader goals of the 15-minute city by integrating accessible, multi-use amenities within a walkable urban context. Rooted in the goals of achieving the Living Building Challenge, the design aims to provide well-being for occupants while enhancing the local ecosystem. The building hosts a repertoire of programs, including indoor and outdoor sports facilities, an aquatics zone, general retail spaces, and a community market. This market is supplied by a vegetative roof, allowing for sustainable local food sourcing. The building’s angular geometry is sculpted to invite movement, drawing users from key pedestrian paths along Atwater Street and anchoring each street corner with a distinct spatial gesture. Situated along the riverfront and in dialogue with the Aretha Franklin Amphitheater, the site incorporates a restored wetland habitat. Mass timber structural systems, ranging from mid- to long-span configurations, define the various volumes, maximizing the functional use of each zone. These structural forms allow for differentiated lighting conditions, spatial experiences, and structural expression.
