Ashmun Rise
David Gale

Sault Ste. Marie’s Ashmun Bay Park is currently an underutilized area with great potential. Ashmun Rise seeks to incorporate the current plans for Ashmun Bay Park, in a way where the desired uses of the park are not inhibited but enhanced. Based on the needs of the city Ashmun Rise provides a natatorium, gymnasium, fitness and weight area, a climbing wall, beach front, fishing pier, boat launch, pedestrian boardwalk to the future lighthouse, several sports courts, and a revitalized nature area at the center of the park. Following the tenants of the Living Building Challenge, Ashmun Rise seeks to become a part of the surrounding ecosystem in both function and program. The three primary spaces pull you toward the highlights of the park: St. Mary’s River, The peninsula and future lighthouse, and the historical Headgate. The facade features a copper cladding, which draws from the Upper Peninsula’s historic copper exports. The copper patinas as it ages, visually representing the building slowly becoming incorporated by it’s natural surroundings.
