Ashmun Ridge Wellness

Logan Caruso

The Ashmun Ridge Wellness Center aims to create an inclusive and accessible space for recreational activity and exercise within Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The wellness center contains many spaces dedicated to exercise, recovery, and learning. The form features three key spaces; Space one features multi-purpose athletic rooms, weight lifting and cardio rooms, classrooms, a 50’-0” tall rock climbing wall, a cafe, and a multi-course indoor running track. Continuing down the primary circulation spine is the second activity space, a natatorium with a short-course Olympic lap pool, leisure pool, and splash pad. Finally, the third space features a full-size basketball court and a flex space depicted as a half-court. The structure itself is composed of mass timber to emphasize sustainability and industry, as well as the culture of logging that has been integral to Northern Michigan for generations. The mass timber is used in a series of portal frames, which effectively support both long-span and short-span spaces, as well as providing an integrated system for the routing of mechanical and electrical systems. With these systems and considerations, Ashmun Ridge Wellness aims to bring a positive culture of activity and learning to a site abundant with opportunity.
