Better Your Oceans

Olivia Neuenschwander

The Problem: According to research, the plastics that mostly pollute the oceans are those that are single-use, such as plastic bottles, bags, straws, and bottle caps. Paper (coffee) cups are also a problem because they are lined with polymer/plastic. These items end up in waterways due to improper waste disposal methods, littering, etc. Plastic breaks down into tiny microplastics, which are eaten by sea life. Plastic entanglement and ingestion causes them harm, injuries, and death.

Concept: Better Your Oceans, inspired by "BYO" and adapted to kids' needs, is an activity book illustrated for 4–8 year-olds that raises awareness about ocean pollution from (single use) plastics, ultimately fostering love and care for sea animals, changing their behavior to adopt environmentally-conscious, sustainable habits into daily life.

Visual Strategy and Design Methods: Bold cartoon imagery and iconography that can either be used with or without line weights, allowing for a vast style illustrations; use simple terms / explain terms simply (ie “single-use plastics,” “pollution,”) and more vibrancy of sea animals than plastics/ocean litter to help kids get into the problem and keep interest
